Kuala Lumpur - Badan tertinggi Islam di Malaysia melarang umat muslim melakukan yoga. Alasannya, latihan fisik asal India itu mengandung elemen-elemen Hindu yang bisa merusak muslim.

Fatwa haram itu dikeluarkan Dewan Fatwa Nasional, yang punya otoritas untuk mengatur bagaimana muslim di negeri jiran itu mempraktekkan keimanan mereka.

Menurut fatwa yang dikeluarkan lembaga itu, yoga bukan cuma melibatkan latihan fisik namun juga elemen-elemen spiritual, pujian dan pemujaan Hindu. Demikian seperti dilansir USA Today, Sabtu (22/11/2008).

Menurut Ketua Dewan Fatwa Nasional, Abdul Shukor Husin, banyak muslim yang mempraktekkan yoga yang populer di dunia itu, tidak mengetahui kalau tujuan akhirnya adalah menyatu dengan Tuhan dari agama lain.

"Kami memandang bahwa yoga, yang berasal dari Hindu, menggabungkan latihan fisik, elemen agama, pujian dan pemujian untuk tujuan mencapai perdamaian dalam diri dan pada akhirnya menyatu dengan Tuhan," kata Husin pada wartawan di Kuala Lumpur.

"Itu tidak sepantasnya. Itu bisa merusak iman seorang muslim," imbuhnya. Dikatakannya, para ulama di Mesir juga telah mengeluarkan fatwa serupa pada tahun 2004 dan menyebut yoga sebagai "penyimpangan."

Belum lama ini dewan tersebut juga mengeluarkan fatwa yang melarang perilaku tomboy. Ditegaskan bahwa anak perempuan yang bertingkah dan bergaya seperti anak laki-laki berarti melanggar ajaran Islam.(ita/ita)

Now that we’ve gotten that sticky subject out of the way, I want to explain this idea of dedicating your practice in greater detail. It’s not even so much about dedication as it is relinquishing or letting go of everything whether they be worries, fears, misunderstandings, or hang-ups. My teacher, Sharon Gannon, always promotes the idea that “You’ve got to get down to get up.” What she means is that you need to be rooted in the here and now and be able to let go of all the fruits of your actions. Why, you ask? Why shouldn’t you just keep on doing yoga to perfect your chatturangas, balance longer in tree pose, and get that yoga butt? The answer is a simple one. What are all those things going to get you in the long run?

Sure, nailing that Chatturanga feels great, and deepening your Hanumanasana (splits pose) can give you a bit of a rush. I’m not denying that one bit, but what is the true purpose behind the motions? Yoga practice can help you to break a cycle, stop bad habits, and transform your life. Yes, it can do all of those things, but you have to let it. You see, you can’t acquire yoga like you can dance steps or aerobic maneuvers; you have to let go of what is obscuring it. You have to let go of your preferences and simply be in the moment as a divine being.

So why do asana at all if you’re not supposed to be attached to the outcome? Because the asanas help to show you the interior of your own mind, they clearly point out what you’re holding on to and what you still need to work through. They transform you into the tree or the warrior and make you see what it is like to step outside of yourself, even for the briefest of moments. Asana also gives you the chance to see that both the world and you yourself are constantly changing. This, in turn, gives you the opportunity to find what is real and unchanging.

When you realize that the purpose of your yoga practice is not to keep you rooted in this world, but to let you move through it, you begin to have faith in your ability to reach the divine with your actions. It can ignite the soul and give you a sense of renewed dignity and worth. Because you know that you’re not just performing the motions for your own benefit, the sense of satisfaction from your practice can grow beyond the mat. For example, have you ever had the opportunity to offer selfless service to another? Maybe you’ve adopted a pet and taken on the full responsibility of loving and caring for it, and, in exchange, all you have received is unconditional love from them for giving happiness and freedom. This is what the act of devotion is all about—realizing that it’s not all about the wishes and wants you only think you need.

When you start letting go of the selfish motives for practice and try to connect with something greater, you inspire your own ability to love. This is the nature of the spirit, and connecting with that is the ultimate goal of yoga practice. Samadhi is union with the divine, a connection with the source, which is true love. Everything else is negligible. As my teachers, Sharon Gannon and David Life, would say, “The sheer desire for Oneness is the way to it.”

Realizing that all the beings in this world are connected in this way is a remarkable step for the yogi. Once the lines between ‘you’ and ‘them’ begin to fade, you realize how important it is to share love and a sense of gratitude with everyone around you.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is an ancient Greek word that means "panting, gasping or short-drawn breath." It is one of the most discomforting of respiratory ailments, known to affect around 5% of the world’s adult population and 10% of children. Asthmatics suffer from periodic attacks of breathlessness interspersed with bouts of complete normalcy.

When normal people inhale, their air sacs fill up with air like small balloons. In exhalation they deflate expelling air. Airways are clear and open in healthy people. In asthmatics, the reverse takes place because their airways and air sacs have lost their shape and have become floppy. Their bronchi and alveoli collapse, rather than expand when air flows through them. As a result, they can inhale and exhale less.

Symptoms of Asthma

1. Dry cough
2. Difficulty in breathing
3. Shortness of breath
4. Feeling of lightness in the chest
5. Wheezing (hissing or whistling sounds during exhalation.)
6. Sometimes an attack is preceded by a running nose, irritated eyes, or an itchy throat.

Two peculiarities of asthmatics:

1. Almost all patients suffer more attacks at night, in their sleep.

2. Asthmatics have more trouble exhaling than inhaling.

Causes for Asthma

Factors that precipitate an asthma attack are called triggers. They cause the air passages to get clogged and constricted, making it difficult for the patient to breathe. The inflamed bronchioles generate more mucus and also cause the muscles around them to tighten and get irritated, constricting the airways. This is called a bronchospasm.

However, asthma has a variety of causes.

1. Allergy: For most it is an allergy to foods, perfumes, scents, body sprays, deodorizers, the weather, drugs or any other irritants. They vary from person to person. However, dust allergies seem to be the most common factor.

2. Combination of Factors: For others, it is triggered off by a combination of allergic and non-allergic factors including stress and tension, air pollution or infections.

3. Abnormal Body Chemistry: Asthma may result from the abnormal body chemistry involving the body’s enzymes or a defect in muscular action within the lungs.

The practices work best on an empty stomach, but you should continue to sip water from time to time, to help keep your airways moist. Wear light, loose-fitting clothes and practice in a comfortable, well-ventilated, airy room or outdoors, with adequate room to lie down. If you experience any symptoms lying down, sit on a chair for a while and rest your head on a table, either on your folded arms or on one cheek. If you feel nauseous, anxious, or short of breath in any of the practices, stop immediately, get up and walk around. You are probably just hyperventilating and need to burn off some energy. Don't resume your practices right away. Rather give them a break for about a day or two.

Above all, tell yourself from time to time – particularly when you get irritated or upset with yourself – that the way you breathe now is what is making you ill. It is conditioned behavior, which can easily be altered.

There is a classical Indian story about three blind men and an elephant. Each of the three blind men are trying to understand exactly what the elephant is like, but experiencing different parts of the large creature. The first blind man is feeling all over the leg of the elephant and says, "It is like a strong tree." But, the second is holding the trunk, explaining, "It is like an ever changing vine." The third blind man is running his hands across the large body of the elephant, exclaiming, "No, it is endless, like a wide mountain." What does this story have to do with Westerners and Yoga? To each of the blind men, the conclusions they have reached about the Elephant is correct, given their experiences and sensory data. Based on their experience with the elephant, they are correct. The problem is with the data itself and forgetting their own limitations. They are not seeing the whole picture and not experiencing the totality of the elephant because the creature is much larger than they are able to grasp. Also they are forgetting their own limitations, i.e., forgetting that they are blind.


In some ways this story illustrates how Westerners view Yoga and the Vedic Sciences. Our conclusions seem valid, given our culture, upbringing and faculties that we commonly use here in the West, yet we often fail to see the bigger picture. Practices like chanting and praying to multi armed Gods and speaking of peace and oneness do not resonate with the individualistic, somewhat cynical, hip image so perpetual in the West. Yoga and the Vedic Sciences are deep and vast and not able to be grasped so quickly. In many ways our perspective is tainted by what we cannot see, and have not been exposed to. Before we close our mind to an entire way of looking at the world, it is first wise to look at ourselves, to look at our own biases, preconceptions and blind spots.

Let’s say we stumbled upon these three blind men while they were arguing about the true nature of the Elephant. One insisting it is like a tree, the other a vine and another a mountain. If like most people we would try to intervene and say, “hey guys, an elephant is a large living creature that roams the Earth in large groups, is sensitive and intelligent.” But why should the blind men believe us? They may suspect that we have ulterior motives. They cannot see the things we are describing. They may be suspicious and feel we are trying to trick them. Perhaps we will profit by selling them our description of the elephant. Most of us are suspicious when relying on second hand information that challenges our core beliefs, which are based on our core experiences. Many are like the blind men, suspicious of Yoga and the deeper layers of it.

Let’s just say we are talking to a blind man who does not believe in light. He has only known darkness. He has never seen the world. What could we say to convince him that sight exists, that light exists? According to his experience, light is not even possible in dreams. Perhaps he will believe us, but perhaps not. There is no concrete proof possible, because it is the experience of sight that is it’s own teacher. The same is true of love and God and everything else meaningful in life. The blind man does not need data and information in order to believe in light, he needs medicine or an operation. He needs to see! No amount of information can convince a person to change their fundamental beliefs and principles. Knowledge is a product of experience, everything else is a belief.

Belief is only necessary for that which we do not know. Belief is based on doubt. For example, for sighted people there is no need to believe in the color yellow. We have experienced the color yellow. Yellow is a fact, if we have sight. But to a blind man, the concept of the color yellow must be a belief because he has no factual knowledge, no experience with the phenomena. If we were to describe the color yellow to the blind man, we would have to refer to things that are a part of his experience. Perhaps something like “ Yellow is like the smell of a lemon and the warmth of the sunshine and the taste of vanilla and the sound of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and he would be more confused than enlightened after that description.

So what to say about our beliefs when it comes to the things we do not know? We too are like the blind men searching for light when it comes to higher concepts like God, or the meaning of life. We must rely on our beliefs because we do not yet know the answer. Our core beliefs are based on our experiences, just like the blind men. In the West we are skeptical of concepts like ‘God” or “worship,” because we are used to these concepts being based on blind faith, which goes against our nature. As sentient beings we are looking for life to make sense, and our part in it to make sense also. Everyone wants to believe in something higher, something transcendent, but we do not want to feel mentally enslaved in the process. In some ways Western religions have unknowingly done that and made us cynical in the process. Western religions are based on worship (Bhakti Yoga) and service. (Karma Yoga ) These are both honorable and important paths, but there is a lack when it comes to satisfying the mind’s need for answers (Jnana Yoga) and the need for proper techniques (Raja Yoga - Hatha Yoga) and methods to increase our level of consciousness, to give that necessary experience of truth, not just dogma or second hand explanations. These truthful experiences are what change our core beliefs.

Yoga and MS

Yoga is known to improve health overall, with every aspect of it enhancing something, mind, body, or spirit. But, overall health aside, yoga is becoming known to be particularly helpful for relief from specific diseases. One of these diseases, Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a bit of a medical enigma, with no concrete causes and no concrete cure.

The course of MS is unpredictable. The four categories used to classify the clinical course in a person with MS are: Relapsing - remitting, Primary-progressive, Secondary-progressive, and Progressive-relapsing. In the absence of a resolution, several treatment options must step in to relieve the burden MS places on so many lives. Physical activity is extremely important for individuals with MS, and yoga is now recognized as an excellent means of MS management.

What is MS?

MS is an autoimmune disease in which the body's defensive immune system attacks and destroys the fatty tissue, the myelin surrounding nerves in the brain and spinal cord. These myelin sheaths perform the same function as insulation around an electrical wire. Without the myelin insulation, nerve impulses from brain to body can short out and become confused, misdirected, or be completely blocked. Symptoms can include numbness and/or tingling in the extremities, weakness, lack of coordination and/or balance, gait difficulties, slurring of speech, blurred or double vision, bowel and bladder dysfunction, vertigo, and heat intolerance.

While no one knows for certain why some people get MS, there is some speculation to its cause. Because those who have family members with MS are at a slightly increased risk, there is speculation that it may be somewhat genetic. There also seems to be a link between where a person lived as a child and getting the disease as an adult. Those who grew up in colder climates, farther from the equator than other geographical locations are more likely to get it, suggesting that it may possess an environmental link. The risk also increases for those people who are of Western European ancestry. And, along these lines, the risk is greatly higher for women than men, with MS infecting three times more females than males.

How Yoga Helps?

Yoga is an excellent means of MS management whether the individual manifests little or no outward signs of the disease, or whether they spend most of their time in a wheel chair. Physical activity is extremely important for individuals with MS. The benefits of yoga postures, breath exercises, and meditation may include increased body awareness, as well as a release of muscular tension, a practice that will help keep muscles from atrophying and relieve spasticity. Yoga may also increase balance and coordination, flexibility and strength, control over fatigue, increased tolerance to heat, improved circulation and breathing, improved organ function, enhanced alertness, better management of stress and on overall feeling of well-being.

In 2003, the specific link between MS help and yoga was researched in a study conducted by the Oregon Health and Sciences University. In this study, the researchers worked with 69 MS patients, having some of them participate in yoga, some of them participate in other types of exercise, and some of them participate in no exercise at all. The researchers concluded that those who participated in yoga and exercise classes had a significant improvement in fatigue, a cornerstone of MS progression.

Because MS may have progressed beyond a person's ability to participate in other forms of exercise, yoga is a good choice, with a certain adaptability and versatility to it. For instance, to help balance, poses such as The Mountain and Warrior can be used with the help of a wall where The Tree and The Eagle poses can be used with the help of a chair. Many poses are restorative, helping the person performing them to feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

Yoga can also benefit MS in several other ways. One way is the empowerment yoga provides, empowering people to make wise choices about other factors that can help MS. One of these factors is healthy eating. Because it's important that those with MS eat meals that are healthy and well-balanced, a person's choice in diet can greatly affect the degree to which MS is debilitating. Yoga has a way of filling a person's mind and body with constructive emotions, allowing them to want to do everything they can to relieve the symptoms of the disease. It makes people self-aware, helping them to realize what actions need to be taken to keep MS in check and helping them to want to perform those actions.

Another way yoga helps is by perpetuating a positive attitude, something that can prove helpful even where modern medicine fails. Yoga helps people to look inward, focusing on the positive emotions they have within them and giving their inner being the ability to heal. This takes the focus off the disease of MS, causing it to loosen its grip in the process. It also helps people to relax, be less stressed, and to believe MS is a disease that they can keep in check. In keeping with the belief that "he who thinks he can and he who thinks he can't is right either way" yoga makes people more optimistic when it comes to their disease, and their life in general..

Learning disabilities are a common cause of frustration for children and adults. It is estimated that as high as 15 percent of Americans have some sort of learning disability. By definition, they are defined as the psychological or neurological conditions that influence a person's ability to communicate and learn efficiently.

While people who have disorders such as ADHD and autism may very well also possess learning disabilities, these types of disorders don't belong in the learning disability category. Diagnoses that do belong, however, can greatly vary, ranging from reading disorders, such as dyslexia, to disorders that disallow for the comprehension of mathematics, such as dyscalculia.

Those who are plagued with learning disabilities are not always of high or low intelligence, though presence on both ends of the spectrum are possible. Likewise, a person born with a learning disability wasn't necessarily born with an inability to learn. Instead, the individual simply possesses a processing impairment, such as an auditory impairment or visual impairment, that makes their ability to learn from routine ways of teaching particularly difficult.


While learning disabilities can weaken a person's ability to learn, the damage they do often falls into deeper crevices. Some people, particularly children, with learning disabilities may have severe self esteem issues, anger problems, behavioral problems, and a desire to quit things like school or extracurricular activities.

How Yoga Helps

The treatment of a learning disability can vary from person to person. Different disabilities require different treatment options and even then, therapy must be determined on an individual basis: what works for one person with dyslexia may not work for another. However, yoga, because it does not focus on the disability but the person, can benefit a variety of people with a variety of learning problems.

Self Esteem: Self esteem can be a hard thing for some people to obtain, particularly when that person feels as though they have something wrong with them. Yoga is a vehicle of self-awareness, self-realization, and self-acceptance, three things that work together to increase a person's sense of self, ultimately solidifying their self esteem.

People who do yoga feel better about themselves and the world around them. They become motivated, better able to tackle the hardships a learning disability, or any kind of disability, can bring. Yoga also helps them gain acceptance of their disability, accepting that they have it and learning what can help minimize the effects of it. Yoga also provides time for self-reflection, helping students to become less influenced by their negative capacities and more influenced by their positive ones.

Conscious Breathing: If there is one function that can help just about anything, it's probably the act of conscious breathing. Breathing helps a person on innumerable levels. From increasing circulation to providing oxidation, from ridding the body of stagnant energy to bringing in fresh forces, breathing helps people to be more in tune, more empowered, and more ready to learn.

Breathing can also help thwart a major element of learning disabilities: frustration.. Because frustration comes along with nearly every learning disability, with some people succumbing to aggravation and hindering their ability to learn even more, the breathing techniques taught in yoga can help people to relax, rejuvenate, and try again.

Concentration: The ability to concentrate is a major factor in the ability to learn. Oftentimes, those with learning disabilities have an impaired ability to concentrate. Yoga, however, facilitates concentration.. Not only does the actual practice of it require students to focus on their breathing as it weaves through the poses, but yoga also gives people the ability to focus when away from the studio.

Yoga increases the circulation of oxygen and blood to the brain, allowing people to focus, to concentrate, and to remember things with greater clarity. It also stimulates the Central Nervous system, the system that serves as the messenger between the brain and the rest of the body. Through the meditation and mindful practices of yoga, people become more centered and balanced, allowing them to focus on tasks at hand with greater attentiveness.

Eye Movements: People who have dyslexia, a learning disability that affects reading and writing, may particularly benefit from practicing yoga. This is because parts of yoga involve eye exercises, with students forming poses and focusing on a certain spot for an extended period of time. These eye exercises can increase the efficiency of the optic nerve, relax the muscles of the face, and increase the functionality of certain areas of the brain. These benefits all work together to improve a person's ability to focus visually, helping them to correctly recognize words in the process.

People with learning disabilities may need a wide range of therapies. Children, in particular, may require more one on one attention during class or tutoring. Even with therapy, however, learning disabilities might not go away entirely. Because many are biological or genetic, some people are just programmed to learn differently than others. However, yoga can help those afflicted to accept their impairment and gain strength by removing the focus from their disabilities and placing it on their abilities.

A room in which a person can practice a yoga routine must be one of comfort. In order to truly reap the benefits of yoga, a person must be able to move around freely and in perfect comfort. When considering your yoga room decorating and design you must be sure to add things that will free you mentally while in the yoga practice so that its benefits will be felt to their fullest.

Yoga, which comes from the ancient practice of meditation, is a moving practice in which you are trying to train your muscles in certain directions while also concentrating on making them more firm. In order to do this practice, there are certain items that you will need to use. Yoga mats should be used to provide your body ultimate cushion and support. It is better to “step out” of your body and see yourself in that particular situation, when a problem occurs. Impartiality is hard to attain, particularly when it comes to your own self, nevertheless it helps to get a balanced point of view on situations or things.
