Polish President Plane Crash

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and high-ranking Polish government and military officials died Saturday in a plane crash in Russia.

The crash killed 96 people, according to an Associated Press report. There were no survivors, the report said, citing Russian and Polish officials. The president's plane, a 26-year-old Russian Tupolev, crashed as it was trying to land in thick fog.

President Kaczynski was flying with his wife and military and government officials to Russia to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn forest massacre, in which Soviet secret police killed thousands of Polish military officers, the report noted.

So far, the crash appears to be an accident with no signs of foul play, the report said.
